<p>Although entrepreneur Eve Taylor, who founded the brand that bears her name some 40 years ago, describes herself as “old school”, her business model, both grounded and generous, could not be more modern.</p>
<p>Eve Taylor London (ETL), run by herself and three of her five sons, employs 18 inPeterborough, Cambridgeshire. </p>
<p>Here more than 60 original natural-ingredient beauty or aromatherapy products for women and men, such as facial oils and cleansers, are made and distributed.</p>
<p>These go to professional therapists with salons and spas in more than 20 countries fromMexicotoMongolia, creating a turnover last year of £1.7 million and on course for £2.2 million in 2012.</p>
<p>Those in the ETL fold need never fear being undercut by discounting, a phenomenon compounded by online offers that has proved fatal to many a small business, explainsTaylor.</p>
<p>“Customers in salons like to buy the products used in their treatments and then carry on the good work at home.</p>
<p>“It has always been a valuable source of income for therapists, which the world over are either women sole traders with a mobile business, or a small high-street shop.</p>
<p>“But bigger brands now maximise sales by discounting with stores or shopping channels. Customers don’t buy from their therapist as they can find products more cheaply elsewhere. </p>
<p>“The salon trade relies on disposable income so it’s been hit hard by the recession and discounting has cost it even more jobs.</p>
<p>“These are skilled women who have often funded their own training to get into business.”</p>
<p>Taylor’s refusal to discount and instead support other small businesses with products and education, led to the company creating a sales platform which has become a unique selling point, she says.</p>
<p>“Salons on tight margins selling expensive brands are struggling and having to adapt to a new economic landscape. What they want is something more affordable but still special. That’s us.”</p>
<p>Customers can buy from the company’s website but at salon prices. “We are always trying to strike a balance between controlling our costs and maintaining sensible prices and the needs of our professional customers so neither is nailed to the floor,”Taylorexplains.</p>
<p>“We don’t offer credit or trade financing, everything is paid for in sterling before it goes out the door.</p>
<p>“But neither do we insist on a minimum order number which helps with salons’ cash flow.</p>
<p>“They know we are on their side in good times and bad. Supporting them both with effective products that have an excellent shelf-life as well as education will sustain our long-term growth and theirs.</p>
<p>“We’re in the right place and the right time now. We are getting new salons on board at a rate of five to 10 a week and export 50 per cent of our output.”</p>
<p>Being a tight-knit business enables ETL to develop new ranges more quickly and customise them for different markets. “Thinking local but acting global sums up our strategy,” saysTaylor.</p>
<p>Her entrepreneurial life started in the Fifties, working forAvonand training as a beautician.</p>
<p>She recalls: “Women were changing. They had had enough of living in grey, post-war austerityBritain.” That led to a career specialising in aromatherapy, teaching, running her own salons and developing a brand.</p>
<p>In the late Eighties the company moved fromLondon, taking advantage of the lower costs and enterprise breaks inPeterboroughto set up its own factory.</p>
<p>In the last decadeTaylor’s belief in “working hard, innovation, never taking things for granted and being prepared to adapt to market conditions” has been fiercely tested as many more brands climbed on the aromatherapy bandwagon, diluting the credibility of the concept.</p>
<p>“We had to change to secure our long-term future,” saysTaylor. A men’s range was followed with £750,000 of investment in new plant and buildings with classrooms.</p>
<p>In 2011 the company was considered such a good bet that Barclays gave it a £200,000 loan. This has been invested in developing a range of more advanced age-resisting and moisturising products, known as cosmeceuticals.</p>
<p>“Our business achievement has been to create high-performance products that can be compared with those of much larger brands but for half the price, which is what our customers expect,” saysTaylor.</p>
<p>“These new ranges are turning us into a global contender for the first time. Our biggest sellers continue to be the basics like our essential oils, but I wish we had started the new skincare investments sooner.”</p>
<p>Taylor, who received an OBE in 2008, still does a six-day week and at almost 80 years of age has never owned a fancy watch or expensive car.</p>
<p>She has no plans to do so, “but we will create four new jobs this year and expand more intoAsia,” she says. “It’s always been about the business for me.</p>
<p>“When people ask why I’m still working at my age I just say it’s not about getting older, I’m just living longer, that’s why I have to learn more all the time.”</p>

<p>The Wales Hair and Beauty Show will be taking place on Sun 1st July 2012 in St David’s Hotel, Cardiff, which is a trade event for the hair and beauty industry serving Wales and surrounding areas.</p>
<p>As part of the show, the organizers are looking for a fresh new look to represent the face of the show from.</p>
<p><strong>Entry Requirements:<br />
</strong><br />
Entrants must be over 18 and living in the UK or Ireland<br />
Competition is open to entrants from the following categories; hair and beauty professionals, makeup artists, models or photographers.</p>
<p>-  An edgy look that reflects the latest hair and beauty trends offerings for<br />
 women in 2012.</p>
<p>- Features can include, make-up, hairstyling, hair extensions, nails, eyelash extensions etc (preferable to show as many as possible) and include a close up facial image and also full model image against suitable background with appropriate fashion and accessories. No nudity allowed.</p>
<p>Model pics needed on a plain or light background where possible and provided in a format suitable for print or website use.</p>
<p>Winner must assign copyright for image for use on show promotion with credits given to all.</p>
<p>Entry limited to 3 images.</p>
<p>Winner will be chosen by Wales Hair and Beauty reps and winner will be announced on the Beauty Finder website.</p>
<p><strong>Closing Date:</strong> Competition closes Wed 25th Jan 2012.</p>

<p>Models are in high demand for hair and beauty courses with students in some cases needing to bring a model or the training school requiring to organise. This also applies to stylists, hair and beauty professionals who are training students and a number of companies need at very short notice.</p>
<p>A new Facebook page has been setup, which allows hair and beauty professionals and colleges to post model assignments in the short term and this will be extended on Beauty Finder to allow Beauty Finder members to post model assignments for courses and in their salons.</p>
<p>The benefits are that models will get a treatment carried out at no cost, in most cases and if you have an interest in the hair and beauty industry it will be a great opportunity to get some experience in the industry.</p>
<p>You can list your model assignments by visiting our Facebook page and posting your assignments or following page updates if you are interested in becoming a hair and beauty model.</p>

Specialist dermatology company, <strong>Cosmedics,</strong> has launched a new range of laser treatments in its new clinic in the heart of Putney, including “pain-free” laser hair removal and also laser skin tightening to turn back the clock on the signs of ageing.</p>
<p>As an independent skin clinic offering cosmetic and medical procedures, Cosmedics are renowned for a unique approach to skincare, combining cosmetic treatments with medicine for outstanding results. However, the addition of laser technology has been very carefully considered by Medical Director, Dr Ross Perry; who spent many months choosing the right technology.</p>
<p>We all know how irritating it is to repeatedly shave and wax, or smother ourselves in ‘miracle’ hair-removal creams. Or perhaps you prefer epilation&#8230; ouch! And it doesn&#8217;t even last &#8211; one day you’re hair-free; the next you’re back to square one. Men and women everywhere need a permanent and long-term hair reduction and laser hair removal is a very popular option. However, not all laser hair removal systems are the same, and experience of the treatment and its results can vary widely.</p>
<p>At Cosmedics, gold-standard laser technology with the Soprano XL system means that treatment is genuinely painless, but is also highly efficient. The diode laser wavelength 810 is revolutionary, because it marks an end to the need for any anaesthesia, pre-treatment cooling or numbing gels. The Sapphire DualChill tip means that patients feel nothing as the laser is used. What’s more, with IN-Motion technology the process is fast: for hair removal, the laser works on a 12&#215;10 mm spot and is used with a sweeping motion, unlike IPL which tends to work by blasting a spot area at a time; and its 10 Hz repetition rate means any given course will be over before you know it.</p>
<p>After just one treatment patients will definitely notice the difference. Compared to other laser systems (IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light machines in particular) the laser machine can be used by all hair and skin types so that everyone can be hair-free.</p>
