Second clean sweep for East Riding in Habia’s National Health and Safety Awards

November 18th, 2010

Salon owners from the East Riding of Yorkshire are celebrating after completing a hat trick in Habia’s National Health and Safety Awards - for the second year running!

Businesses from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council area took the top prize in all three categories – hair, beauty therapy and barbering – with the results being announced live on stage at this year’s Salon International.

The winning salons were Indulgence from Howden, in the hairdressing category; Spirit from Pocklington, in the beauty therapy category; and Toffs from Goole, in the barbering category.

Organised by Habia, with support from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities, the National Health and Safety Awards showcase salons that have achieved Habia’s regional award but have gone the extra mile beyond what is normally required to set an example to their fellow businesses.

Salons are nominated by their local authority for demonstrating exceptional commitment to health and safety, before providing a portfolio of their business and details of health and safety initiatives they have implemented.  Winners are then selected by an appointed panel of experts.

Tracey Murr, of Spirit salon – which has also been involved in Habia’s Bad Hand Day campaign to raise awareness of dermatitis – said, “It’s wonderful.  We are really pleased that all the hard work has paid off.  It’s really nice to bring the team down to Salon to win such a prestigious award.  We’ve been quite involved with Bad Hand Day as we have had a few employees that have suffered quite badly from dermatitis, so we went out of our ways to find different resources to try and help them.”

Sue Tracey, of Indulgence, said, “We can’t believe it.  I am so proud.  We thought we were going to miss the awards ceremony so it’s absolutely fantastic.  It’s a real achievement.  The Habia Health and Safety Pack has been a lifesaver for us.  Before that health and safety was a minefield, but once I bought the pack it made it much more manageable and easy.  All the girls in the salon have read it and understand it.”

Melania Branford, of Toffs – which had won the barbering category two years ago – said, “I am so happy.  We never thought we would win and it’s amazing that we have won it again.  I’m proud to have our salon, and everything that goes into the salon, recognised for the second time.  It’s great encouragement for us and I’d encourage salons across the country to enter.  Habia are working very hard to help all of us in the industry to improve. “

Chris Dunnachie, Senior Environmental Health Officer for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said, “Gaining the Habia National Health and Safety Award is a superb achievement for the three salons from our area.  Owners and staff at Spirit, Indulgence and Toffs have clearly demonstrated that their extra commitment to health and safety does not have to be time consuming or expensive and that incorporating and mainlining excellent standards of health and safety within salon practice is clearly good for business reputation and customer confidence.  I would encourage all salons to engage in dialogue with Habia and their Local Authority inspectors to this end.”

Wendy Nixon, Habia’s health and safety expert, said, “It’s an incredible achievement for one local authority to achieve a clean sweep in the National Health and Safety Awards for two years running.  It just goes to show how much effort East Riding of Yorkshire Council and salons in the region have put into the awards in terms of commitment.”
